John Poindexter

November 4, 1952 ~ October 5, 2020

John Franklin Poindexter 67, of Norwich KS passed away Monday morning, October 5, 2020, at St. Francis hospital in Wichita, KS. He was born on Election Day, November 4, 1952 shortly after his mother voted. John was the son of Franklin Louis and Florence Eilene (Melton) Poindexter/Dillman Ash. He married the love of his life Karen Jo Winzer on August 2nd, 1980.

John graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in May of 1972 and joined the Navy in October of that same year. He proudly served in the Navy achieving the rank of Machinist Mate Third Class Petty Officer (SS) John Franklin Poindexter. He was honorably discharged on August 23rd, 1976. Because of his service, he was deeply patriotic and never missed a chance to thank a service member or fellow veteran for their service. John graduated from “The School of Hard Knocks”, at least that is what he told his kids when they asked him where he went to college. As his kids got older, they understood what that meant and had a great respect for their dad. John was a beloved member, a Deacon, and a Sunday School teacher for the First Baptist Church in Norwich, Kansas. He retired from The United States Post Office on October 1st, 2019 after 33 years. John also served as a volunteer firefighter on the Norwich Fire Department and retired after 23 years in 2019. John enjoyed participating in community functions and events, and especially being Santa Claus’ ambassador from the North Pole, along with being Santa’s ambassador he was the unofficial ponytail puller. He was a proud member of the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Pageant, serving in the Cavalry for several years and then on a wagon team with his brother Don. John loved being with his family, his family was everything to him, and he was crazy about his four granddaughters. They were his world and he enjoyed nothing more than spoiling them rotten, sometimes against their parents’ wishes. But most of all, John was a proud family man, an amazing husband, a wonderful Dad, and The Perfect Gampa.

In addition to his wife Karen, he is survived by his three children Amanda Manning (Carl) of El Paso, Texas, John F. Poindexter II of Pascagoula, Mississippi (Mika) of Yokosuka, Japan, Levi Poindexter (Lizzy) of Atwood, Kansas. His four granddaughters: Taylor Proffitt, Jennifer Poindexter, Clair Poindexter, and JulieAnne Poindexter. Two brothers, Robert Poindexter (Marlo) of Winnemucca Nevada, Don Poindexter (Teresa) of Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Several nieces and nephews. Step brother, Joe Ash (Debbie) of Montana, and stepsister, Kelly Loiselle of Medicine Lodge Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Eilene, stepfather, Dillman Ash, and stepsister, Anita Cook.

A celebration of life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday October 10, 2020 at the Norwich City Park, Norwich, KS. Graveside services will follow 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
