Enid Hope Claypole Leachman, daughter of J.J. and Mamie Claypole, was born in Wellington, KS, on September 23, 1921. Enid attended rural school and graduated from Caldwell High School.
She met James R. Leachman while he was serving in the army and she was working in a drugstore in Battle Creek, MI. They were married June 19, 1948. He was a physical therapist and wherever they were stationed, Enid would find a job in the hospital cafeteria or as a volunteer. Over the years, when Enid was living in Caldwell, she would work for Pat and Lillian Allen in the liquor store.
Jim’s military career took them to Japan and several army bases in the United States. Even after retirement they continued to move every few years, eventually settling for good back home in Caldwell.
Enid passed away December 21,2008 in the Sumner County District #1 Hospital in Caldwell, KS, at the age of 87.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.J. and Mamie Claypole, her husband, James Leachman on February 21, 1993, sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Arthur Thomas and nephew, Carter Rex Thomas.
Enid is survived by nieces, Jaretta and Sam Garlett of Ponca City, Oklahoma and Jannie and David Wittum of Caldwell; great nieces, Tammy Puchalla and her husband Eric of Arkansas City, KS, Brandy Welch of Ponca City, OK and Becky Wittum of Winfield, KS; great nephew, Samual Garlett; great-great-nephews, Grant and Carter Puchalla of Arkansas City,KS and Kody Wittum of Winfield, KS.
Family graveside services will be held after cremation.
Memorials may be given to the Caldwell High School Alumni Scholarship Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
